Chana dal is also known as chenaga pappu, bengal gram, chane ke dal. But this chana dal is different from chutney dal or senaga pappu which will be used in coconut chutney or to make some podi or powder. this chana dal is closely related to chick pea family.

How to roast chana dal

Take a pan on the stove and add chana dal or bhuna chana dal and dry roast on medium flame until they get nice golden color (it may take roughly 10 minutes) .

  1. Roast the chana dal for 2 min on medium flame, then add red chilies & cumin seeds and roast until you get nice aroma from the chana dal (it may take upto 8 – 10 minutes).
  2. After chana dal gets roasted, remove them into a plate and cool them.
  3. Chop the coconut into small pieces.
  4. Take a mixy jar add chana dal, red chilies, coconut pieces, jeera, salt, jaggery, tamarind and make them into a paste (like chutney) with the help of water.
  5. Heat a small pan add oil for tempering, after oil gets heated add jeera & red chilies fry for few seconds and add them into chutney bowl.
  6. Serve this easy & yummy chana dal chutney or chenaga pappu chutney with rice roti chapati idli dosa.

  • Coconut pieces – 15 small pieces
  • Red chilies – 3 – 4  medium (as per your taste)
  • Salt – 1 ½ tbsp (as per your taste)
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tbsp
  • Tamarind – 2 inches
  • Jaggery – ½ of small lemon size
  • Oil – 3 tbsp
  • Water
