semiya upma recipe is another South Indian popular breakfast.  vermicelli upma is one of my most favorite breakfast which has an awesome taste. upma is not only delicious but nutritious too.this breakfast recipe is my most favorite breakfast. i will prepare semiya upma recipe regularly. in this upma vermicelli are cooked along with some veggies and spices to get nice tasty breakfast.

i am adding chana dal, cashews and peanuts in the semiya upma to get nice flavors and taste to the upma. if you want you can add only chana dal or peanuts.

to prepare this semiya upma take care while adding tomato quantity because if you add more then upma will get little bit sour taste. the ingredient measurements shown in the upma will perfectly suits for two people for breakfast, in case for more people just double the measurements.

to get nice grainy texture for the upma, we will roast the semiya or vermicelli or seviyan in ghee until semiya got golden color. some times when there is no time i will skip this step.

add correct quantity of water as mentioned in the recipe otherwise semiya upma will get sticky texture. i have added mtr vermicelli to the upma recipe you can add bambino vermicelli too to the upma.

how to prepare semiya upma recipe

  1. Wash and peel the potato’s skin.
  2. Chop the potato, tomato & onion into small pieces.
  3. Heat kadai add oil, green chilies and fry for few seconds.Add onions, tomatoes and salt and fry for few seconds.
  4. Now add potatoes and fry for few seconds.
  5. Add ground nuts & channa dal & cashews and fry for 1min.Add water and boil (by covering the kadai with lid) it until potatoes gets cooked.
  6. While boiling, heat a tawa, add ghee and after ghee melts add semiya or vermicelli and fry until it gets golden color.
  7. After potatoes gets cooked add semiya and mix well and cook (by covering the kadai with lid) until semiya gets cooked or water is absorbed fully by semiya.
  8. Now you can switch off the flame and enjoy the taste.
  9. Delicious and nutritious vermicelli upma is ready for enjoying.

  1. Vermicelli or semiya or seviyan -1 cup
  2. Green chilies – 5 small or 3big (as per your taste)
  3. Salt – 1 ½ tbsp (as per your taste)
  4. Potato – 1 medium
  5. Tomato -1 medium
  6. Onion -1 medium
  7. Ground nuts -2 tbsp
  8. Oil -3 tbsp
  9. Channa dal -1-2 tbsp
  10. Water – 2 and hlaf cups
  11. Ghee -1 tbsp

  • After potatoes gets cooked (to know whether potato is cooked take one potato piece and smash with your fingers, if it is smashed easily then potato are cooked, otherwise if it is not cooked then cook for another 3 minutes) add semiya and mix well and cook (by covering the kadai with lid) until semiya gets cooked or water is absorbed fully by semiya.

note on vermicelli upma:

  1. you have to dry roast the semiya until you get nice golden color to get nice grainy texture for the recipe.
  2. always add correct quantity of water as i have mentioned in the recipe and if you want little dry texture then reduce 1/4th quantity of water.
  3. add correct amount of salt to the recipe, you can test the salt after veggies are cooked that means before adding the vermicelli to the water.
  4. always cook the vegetables and upma by covering the lid.
